type='text'>Where the old and the new re-unite-Convocation 2009

Well ,it's been a long time since the last blog post and as usual,LIBA has been buzzing with activities. On 31st October the convocation for the batch of 2007-2009 was organised. The day began with a friendly match between the 2008 batch and the 2007 batch in which the present second(with a few first years for support) year batch lost by two overs. The alumni were then seen hanging around college and catching up with friends and faculty after the match, while the rest of the batch started preparing for the Convocation. The Convocation ,with Mr.Venu Sreenivasan presiding as chief guest, was a great success, though it did get extended by an hour. However the delay was more than made up for by the snacks and goodie bags passed around. The alumni then took Sunday to refresh their memories and bond with "their juniors".
Yet,life at LIBA does not sleep ever. There are more such events in the pipeline.Watch this space for more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DIWALI 2009 @ LIBA

Diwali – “The Festival of Lights”, is certainly the biggest and brightest of all Indian festivals. The word ‘Deepavali’ literally translates as ‘a row of lamps’ in Sanskrit. It would be quite foolish on my part to give an account of the festival in general, as all of us- Indians are well aware of it… So I would directly jump to how we celebrated Diwali in LIBA... The best Diwali of my life :) ….
My day started at 5 AM. Gosh… U might be thinking that I am quite an early riser… But actually it was the sound of crackers that woke me up so early in the morning. With the ambient noise level going upto 90 decibels or more right outside my window, It was not possible for me to continue my peaceful slumber. The entire day I just lazed around the house. The celebrations @ LIBA were from 6.30 PM onwards. As I was handed the responsibility of making the Rangoli design, I started early from home and reached college at around 4PM. When I reached the diyas were already placed all over the OAT and the college blocks. On one side of the OAT I was making the Rangoli and on the other side, Suman and Sanya were drawing an image of Ganesha. Once done, me, Kavita & Tess filled the Rangoli with different colors which nearly took us two hours. By this time, students started coming in, in their best ethnic attires… It was really a gorgeous night with all the lighted diyas and the gorgeously dressed people. In the middle of the OAT we placed a photo of Goddess Lakshmi and all the pooja stuffs. We also made a huge Swastik with the diyas which eventually was remade by Anurag(2nd year) as it turned out to be a reverse Swastik. Once everyone has arrived & the festive mood was set, Anurag started doing the Puja and some of the girls sang various Bhajans. Everyone then did the Aarti turn by turn. For me, it was the first Aarti of my life and a totally new experience. As soon as the puja was over, we heard Dhol beats coming from behind. We turned around and saw Ankit(LIBA Student Coordiantor) coming towards the OAT with a “Dholi”. It was a surprise for all of us & it didn’t take us even a single second to start dancing to the dhol beats… to be precise Bollywood dhol beats. Even those who have never danced before, broke all the barriers of their shyness and joined us in dancing. It reminded me of Dandiya as we formed a huge circle and went round and round dancing. Once we all were famished, we were served with lots of snacks & cold drinks by 360 degree volunteers. In just few words, we had a Blast!!!
Here ends the account of Diwali 2009 celebrated @ LIBA. My ‘Best’ Diwali though didn’t end here :). There is more to it but I am supposed to end it here . Diwali this year was a huge SUCCESS, thanks to 360 degrees & I am proud to be a part of it…

Pritha Gupta

PGDM 09-11

“SHRIEKFEST” – From Fight Night to Fright Night

LIBARATED ’09, as promised by 360 Degrees (Student Affairs Committee of LIBA) was a haunting experience for all those present on Campus. Why? Read On…
Like every year, this year too ‘LIBARATED’ – LIBA’s annual intra-college Cult Fest broke barriers and brought together the vast LIBA family under one roof on Sunday, 11th October 2009. LIBARATED always has a theme attached to it. Last year, it was “Fight Night” and this year we came up with “SHRIEKFEST”. As the theme suggests, the venue had a spooky feeling about it. 360 degrees – the organizers of LIBARATED ’09 made the entire OAT look like a haunted house with R.I.P written coffins, gravestones, bats, skulls, spider webs with spiders and a lot more spooky and haunted stuffs. There were way markers with words like “Way to Haunted LIBA Mansion”, “Enter at your own Risk”, “Trespassers are Welcome”, etc. The OAT saw students from various batches dressed to kill as they dressed themselves up as spirits, vampire, werewolves, zombies, etc. Whoever dared to enter the haunted LIBA Mansion, had to compete with the most talented of the undead that LIBA offered that fateful night. The only way to get out alive was to win! There were three competitions – Phantom of the Opera (Singing competition), Dance of the Death (Dancing competition) and The Moonwalk (Fashion Show competition). Students from batches of Part time, Diploma and the first and second year students of full time PGDM batches were thrown against each other on stage to put on their dancing shoes, to test their vocal chords and to set the ramp on fire.
LIBARATED ’09 was inaugurated by our Director Fr. Christie. Our Judges and Chief Guests were the Super-Seniors (Full Time PGDM 07-09 Batch). To name a few - Mrinal Vikram Tripathi, Gagan Sharma, Rajat Arora, Pallavi Sharma, Pallav Gupta, etc. The function started with the ‘Phantom of the Opera’. This was in turn divided into solo and group performance. The solo performance was won by Kavita Ramona Chandradhas of first year. The group performance was won by a duet song performed by the second year group led by Arun. This was followed by The Moonwalk Fashion Show Competition between the full time first year and second year PGDM students. The First years, about 20 of us, set the ramp on fire with our scintillating ramp walk. The walk was choreographed by Goldie D’Souza and the Ghostly Face Paintings were done by me. And as expected, We won the show… Last but not the least, was the Dance of Death Competition. This was won by the Second year Full Time PGDM students, whose dance moves were very synchronized and innovative. Bonus points were awarded to those performances which were based on the theme. Apart from these three events, there were On-spot face painting competitions, “Fear-Fiction”- the Horror story writing competition, etc. There were also various food stalls to quench the thirst and feed the hunger of the undeads of LIBA.
All the LIBAites gave their best to compete within themselves, for providing sheer entertainment and for feeling the sense of belonging to LIBA. LIBA looked out of the world; thanks to 360 Degrees for taking the enthusiasm level to its crescendo….

Sanghita Nandi

PGDM 2009-2011

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; This was the motto with which the concept of Joy of Giving week was started. Joy of Giving week(27th September to 1st October) was an initiative of Give India, an NGO that is dedicated to changing lives, lives of not only the poor but also of the needy. LIBA also wanted to contribute in a small but effective way. So a number of activities were organized both on and off campus. which were as follows:
Inauguration Ceremony
Joy of Giving Week was flagged off at LIBA on 27th September, 2009 with a small inaugural function organized by the students. The inauguration was blessed by the presence of Rev. Fr. Maria Augustine, Professor Victor Louis Anthuvan and Professor Alagu Perumal Ramasamy.
Orphanage Visit
The plan for the day was to spend time with mentally challenged children at MITHRA, Anna Nagar.
A group of more than 25 Libaites reached Mithra at around 11a.m. The event went on till 3p.m. The students of LIBA had various events and games through which they were able to make those little children participate and at the same time entertain them.
- LIBA students conducted games and at the end of it gave chocolates to all the children.
- We also spent time talking to the kids, playing board games, football etc.
- We had organized dance programs and songs for the kids and also made them dance along with us. The children enjoyed every minute that we spent with them and so did we.
- We provided them with things that they had requested: clothes, slippers, accessories etc.
- We sponsored their dinner for the day.
It was a wonderful learning experience for all those who were there with the children at MITHRA and surely an eye opener as to what we can do for the society in our way. We Libaites have a very busy schedule during the week and many a times we have no weekends too. But we were able to understand the fact that there are people who need us, our time and our love. So, as future leaders our learning is to balance our life in such a manner that we can give time for others and share this testimony with the world that anything is possible through love and giving.

Waste to Wealth
While the world around enjoyed a relaxing holiday amidst the festivities, volunteers of LIBA Radius, the Social Initiative of LIBA, were busy working full throttle on cleaning up the campus. It was the second day of the Joy of Giving (JOG) week and it was evident that our volunteers were out to make a difference. In the first half of the day the garbage around the LIBA Hostel was cleared and segregated into plastic waste, metal and glass. The bio-degradable waste was left untouched to fertilize the soil. Appropriate safety measures were taken as the volunteers wore gloves and masks.
In the second half of the day, the garbage around the field adjacent to the LIBA hostel was collected and loaded on to cement bags. Carrying a yellow cement bag and loading garbage into it – the sight did resemble what we see very often on our streets - and mind you, it’s very easy to poke fun at others. Not the type who’d shy away or be ashamed of what others think, the volunteers were upfront in saying that they got to taste the reality of life as experienced by rag pickers trying to seek out a living on the high streets. Now that’s some plain-speaking without mincing words.
The activity did not just end with picking up rags, an idea is on the cards to construct a garden in the place where the rubbish was cleared out – closely connecting with one of the three pillars of Radius. Any guesses? Transform – yes this activity would essentially transform a garbage dump into something of lasting beauty.
The non-biodegradable waste collected was given to Exnora – a foundation that works to dispose of non-biodegradable waste in the most safe and efficient manner.

Eye Donation Camp
Donate eyes, Donate sight.. They say, by donating one set of eyes, you give two other people, the hope of sight. The eyes are one set of organs that can be transplanted easily. Even people with myopia and hypermetropia can donate eyes. This is one property that sets it apart from donation of other organs or blood donation. In case of blood donation, people with sugar or other conditions cannot donate. This organ donation can be done by anyone. To serve as a portal for this donation, LIBA Radius, the social initiative in LIBA, conducted an eye pledge drive as an event during the Joy of Giving week. This was conducted in association with Sankara Nethralaya on 28th Sept 2009 on LIBA campus. The drive was extended till 1st Oct 2009, to clear doubts and give, many part time and executive students, the chance to experience the joy of giving by donating their eyes. About 50 people, comprising of students and faculty members, came forward to donate their eyes, happy at the chance to give something back to the society. This initiative also helped clear many doubts prevailing in the minds of the students at LIBA, regarding the process of eye donation. On the whole, this drive was successful in its purpose: to give each the option to experience the Joy of Giving.

Tree plantation
In the beginning man was living in the forest without any worries they lived happily in the dark forest, but as civilization started the natural shelters of trees were replaced by walls buildings etc but with civilization man has brought a new disease to the universe the “Global warming”. We as a part of LIBA Radius took the initiative of planting about 80 saplings around the LIBA campus as an inauguration for making the campus green and the world surrounded by it. Volunteers were so interested in lending a helping hand and the set target of 80 saplings, which was successfully achieved. And a new trend towards the development of this tree planting project, we students of LIBA have adopted a tree each, which we will be taking care of them till they manage to grow by themselves. It was indeed happy as we started watering and guarding the trees, a added up responsibility to our hectic schedule of studies, but this is really a cute project where we forget our worries and enjoy the enrichment of nature with our love towards it. This indeed is a path way for creating not only a green campus but a greener world. Let’s protect the nature!!!
Clothes collection
As part of the Joy of Giving Week, LIBA’s Social Initiative Radius organized a clothes collection campaign. It served the twosome purpose of instilling a sense of responsibility towards the society in the students while at the same time finding people who would put to use stuff that was lying unused with the students. Donating old clothes to charity came across as a great idea for many reasons. Donating old clothes can be very much helpful to society as people who need affordable clothing can have access to donated clothes. The environment also benefits since clothing thrown away rather than donated ends up in the uselessly polluting the land.
The campaign encouraged the students to donate clothes that are wearable, clothes which does not fit them would definitely fit someone who needs it. Students came forward and donated clothes (not special occasion clothes) that had stayed in their safes and wardrobes for more than two months indicating clearly that they did not need them anymore and therefore should give them away.
However, the driving force of the campaign was that that there is extreme joy in giving away something that one loves so much, than that one may not like because the real Joy of Giving lies in parting with things one values greatly.
The clothes donation campaign at LIBA started on 29 September, 2009 and lasted till 1 October 2009. Collection booths were set up at two places in LIBA and were open to both the fulltime and part time students. Students participated in the campaign with great fervour and by the end of the campaign a large carton of clothes was available for donation. These clothes were packed and handed over to Goonj, Seva Samajam Children's Home (75, Bajanai Kovil Street, Pallipattu, Chennai).

Guest lecture on Social entrepreneurship
Mr. Mahadevan of Oriental Cuisines shared with us his experience and the path which lead him to great heights. We had an enthralling 20 minutes lecture on Social Entrepreneurship. He spoke about the qualities that an Entrepreneur should poses, where he emphasised on discipline, quantitative ability (ability to analyse the figures) while dealing with large number of units, being able to get things done even when we are not around the work place. He shared with us many of his personal experiences where the above mentioned qualities had come handy. He also stressed on the importance of an employee in an organisation and the way in which he has to be treated. He says that profit is not a bad word in social entrepreneurship. He made us realise that without profit the purpose of the Business is not fulfilled. The profit is needed to achieve the social motive for which the business is started. Mr. Mahadevan employs several economically backward people who are getting pension benefits, insurance, etc... and above all a secured life for them, in more than 70 countries. Apart from this he is also supporting several NGOs. A simple, down to earth person who has achieved so much in life and is passionate about giving back to the society which brought him up, was just extremely amazing to listen to.

Conference on Social Entrepreneurship
The LIBA Radius is a happening activity in our college, the club which has the most number of committee members, a deed if it’s good for the society; people are very much interested in participating and serve them. But people have lots of desires and aspirations that is why they are here at LIBA for a post graduation. But how I as a management graduate help the society and of course also fulfil their desires.
The morning session guest lecture by Mr. Mahadevan was an eye opener for us, further more to throw light upon the act of benevolence towards the society we had the mini conference on Social Entrepreneurship with the theme – we “mean” business.
LIBA radius in association with LIBA Entrepreneurship Cell organized a mini conference on Social entrepreneurship on 1st October 2009 as part of the Joy of giving fest, to infuse the need of entrepreneurship for social cause. Inspirational speeches by Fr. Joe Arun, Mr. Sriram Iyer and Ilango Rangasamy were all directed towards lighting up the fire of entrepreneurship among students of LIBA.
Fr. Joe Arun introduced the environment of Social entrepreneurship that means bridging the gap between Social motive and business motive. Then Mr. Sriram Iyer gave us a first hand experience of Social entrepreneurship, stating his personal experiences on the subject matter. We then had Ilango Rangasamy a leading entrepreneur of TVSG who gave us an insight on the various resources with the help of which we can make social entrepreneurship possible and can go on to change lives for ourselves and others. Both the speakers gave us an inspiring speech, which we could think about goodness for the society that can be provided even by people who are so busy in this competitive corporate world. They gave us insights on many aspects of Social Entrepreneurship which I think would be a boost for people who were thinking of doing a socially motive organization.
They give a major part of their timing and money for the welfare of the society, this conference where they shared their experience was really a awe inspiring one which will make all of us a socially responsible personalities.
With this event our JOY OF GIVING WEEK came to an end, the program was coming to an end but we have started enjoying and this will continue forever serving the nation.

Abdul Basheer Khan

PGDM 2009-2011

New Beginnings................Alumni Committee

As is true with all things in life, it is very important to have a link with the past to improvise and grow in the future. Last week was also similar with elites like Mr. T.V. Madhusudhan coming to college to give a lecture on the 'Value of IPR’s (Intellectual property rights)'.
We live in an era of globalization and intense competition. In this day and age, with goodwill and brands becoming more important than the actual product itself, we need to realize the value of IPR in running an organization.
We were enlightened about the importance of IPR’s by Mr. Madhusudhan. As explained by him, IPR’s are price objective to everyone. There are many types of IPR and the chief ones among them are patents, trademark, trade secrets, integrated circuits, plant varieties, etc.
Mr. Madhusudhan also spoke about breakthrough inventions and advised students that ideas, intelligence and inventions should not be treated as waste and should be considered as valuable assets.
Inventors and their discoveries are there to make our life easier, comfortable and much better and rewarding. Hence, he suggested ways in which we can thank the inventors like patents, design, trademark, geographical indications, copyrights, trade secrets and knowledge economy. According to him, an IPR is a technical, commercial and business tool -entrepreneurs and inventors should tap the advantages of this useful tool to see their business flourishing in near future.
The lecture was concluded with the following valuable management tools and advice to future managers of LIBA:
• Reduce redundant Research and Development activity.
• Market IP to buyers.
• Indentify technology spin off opportunities.
• Determine economies of IP enforcement.
• Evaluate commercial prospects for early stage Research and Development.
• Convert goodwill based valuation to market based valuation.
Mr. Madhusudhan effectively and patiently clarified and answered the doubts and queries of the students during the question-answer session.
The session was concluded with a vote of thanks and a memento being presented to the speaker by Dean, Mr. Gowrishankar".

Sofia Saxena

PGDM 2009-2011

The "Business Plan Competition" returns.......

“There is only one way to make a great deal of money; and that is in a business of your own.” – J. LIBA E-CELL Takes Off

“You have to dream before your dreams come true.”
-by Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam.

There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, "Yes, I've got dreams, of course I've got dreams." Then they put the box away and bring it out once in awhile to look in it, and yep, they're still there. These are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, "How good or how bad am I?" That's where courage comes in." The young entrepreneurs at LIBA believe in their Dreams, believe in their courage and most importantly they believe in themselves. And Yes they have the guts to look upon their dreams and put them on the line. Every long journey starts with a First step and that step has been put into action by the young, energetic, dedicated, courageous and ambitious students of LIBA.

The young aspirant entrepreneurs at LIBA believe that if you chase your ‘Dream’, if you have the courage to ‘Dare’ we will make you ‘Deliver’. If you are the one who wants to do things differently, who wants to stand out of the crowd, who has the desire to make your dream come true then this is the place for you.
A bunch of students who want to be future entrepreneurs gathered together and started an ‘E-Cell’ in order to promote the idea of entrepreneurship and help the budding entrepreneurs to achieve their goals. It recalls the era of golden fraternity during the reign of King Mahabali. According to the legend, Mahabali was a kind and benevolent king, who despite his virtues, had one shortcoming. He was very egoistic. This weakness in Mahabali's character was utilized by Gods to bring an end to his reign as they felt threatened by Mahabali's growing popularity. However, for all the good deeds done by Mahabali, Vishnu granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached. It is this visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam every year. People make all efforts to celebrate the festival in a grand way and impress upon their dear King that they are happy and wish him well.

We,at LIBA ,too celebrated Onam this year in a grand style.Due to the End Term exams occurring during Onam, this year the celebrations were postponed.

According to LIBA tradition, the Malayali Manga (Ms. World) crown is unveiled in presence of everyone two days before the actual celebration. On 21st September,2009, the Crown was unveiled in front of the library at 9.30 AM. During the ceremony, last year’s winner Ms. Nina Roby was crowned again and nominations were called for this year’s Malayali Manga contest to be held on 23rd September. The excitement was palpable in the air in anticipation of the festive joys and everyone was waiting in anticipation for the Onam celebrations and for Malayali Manga-2009.

On 23rd September, an intricately decorated ‘Pookkalam’ (flower rangoli) was made in front of the Library to welcome King Mahabali. The day started as usual with the morning classes .However as the day progressed, everyone got into a festive mood. All the girls wore Kerala Saree and the boys wore ‘Mundu’ (The Kerala version of Sarong/Lungi) for the occasion.
As soon as the classes were over, everyone assembled in the Auditorium for the function. The function started with our Director Fr. Christie lighting the lamp, which was followed by the narration of the history of Onam and traditional malayali songs and dances performed by the students. Then, with much pomp, our Chief Guest of the day arrived – our own King Maveli, enacted by Mr. Ankesh Tyagi of second year.
As soon as Mahabali had settled down, the beauty pageant for the girls, more popularly known as ‘Malayali Manga’ (Malayali version of Ms. World) started. It consisted of three rounds and of course, a catwalk on the ramp. The show was hosted by Ms. Sandhya Kurian, the gorgeous Ms. Fresher of Batch 2008-2010.And the panel of judges was comprised of our Dean Dr. K. Gowrishankar, Prof. G. Revathi and Prof. T.M. Gopal.. There were 11 contestants in total and in the first round they were asked to introduce themselves. While they were introducing themselves, there were loud roars from the audience cheering their respective favorites. After the introductions were over, they were asked to walk the ramp once. Then the second round consisted of the question-answer round where different questions related to malayali culture were asked to different participants, for example someone was asked to enlist five traits by which one can recognize a malayali from the crowd. During the third round, everyone was given a piece of paper and a pen, and they were asked to jot down in 3-4 lines their definition of ‘Beauty’. While our judges were deliberated on the results, we had a tongue twister competition which was won by Davis Joseph of first year. Finally, after a long wait, the results were declared by none other than our very own Mahabali. Aloma Scarlett of first year(2009-2011 batch)was crowned Miss Malayali Manga-2009 by last year’s winner Neena Robby ,with Lisette Desouza and Goldie Desouza being the First and Second Runner-up respectively. Last but not the least, Ms. Sanghita Nandi of First year was awarded for the pookkalam design, bringing the function to an end.
The teachers then proceeded for the Feast, while the students were head for the car park to assemble for the Tug of War between the senior and junior boys. Here, at first, the sections of each batch competed against each other with Section B of 2009-2011 batch and Section A of 2008-2010 batch emerging as winners.similarly the two sections of Batch 2008-2010 competed where Section A stole the show. Finally, the two batches competed against each other in a face-off with the girls and boys of the respective batches cheering their team. After some fierce pulling and lots of excitement, the Tug of War was won by Batch 2009-2011. Ater the tug-of war everyone proceeded for the feast-the traditional “ONAM SADHYA” arranged at our Loho canteen which ,needless to say, was a real delight. With this the day came to an end and we were all back to our respective classes. Yes…there was another class scheduled after the function at 3.30PM!!!!!!!
The next celebration is Libarated 2009… Till then See Ya…

Sanghita Nandi

PGDM 2009-2011

Beyond Boundaries-"BEYOND MANAGEMENT"

Alongwith with an "insight" into the events happening at LIBA, we are also going to introduce the various clubs and committees which are integral to the life of students at LIBA.
The first committee to be introduced in this forum is BEYOND MANAGEMENT.Here is an excerpt of what they have to say-

As business becomes increasingly global in industries that demand relentless innovation, we are called upon to deliver unique and robust solutions in a wide range of circumstances. We can meet this challenge only with people of diverse cultures, experiences and viewpoints. Our strategy is to be global in scope. We want to institute programs to help identify, support and cultivate the next generation of leadership along with the completion of our MBA program. It is through learning, alone that we apply and excel. Without question, we possess that level of purpose. Therefore, Beyond management was born. We believe, to excel is not optional, it is what we must be.
Last year, we primarily focussed on organising the ‘Speaker series‘ through this forum. We had subject matter experts interacting with our students on current issues on a one to one basis. While our people survey shows we have made progress on many fronts, we know that there is still much work to be done. We envision the business and financial issues that will confront us tomorrow and ensure that we will have the competency that will be needed to serve them. In a global business environment, this calls for an immense array of resources-it requires specialised industry knowledge, proficient cultural and language skills. It demands fresh perspectives and creative solutions. Hence, this year we intend to include a broader level of activities.
• Support of and partnership with existing committees and networks on and off campus.
• Organise training workshops related to management and beyond through the year.
• Broaden the scope of speaker series –inviting people from diverse backgrounds
• Partner with alumni on a regular basis-to identify the challenges /transition post MBA
• Dedicated training and awareness programs on diversity and leadership.
We at beyond management look forward to the academic year of 2009-2010.
Below is the list of speakers which the Beyond management team has called upon to deliver guest lectures this year so far.
Mr R Ramaraj:Senior Advisor at Sequoia Capital
Mr Vivek Aggarwal:DGM, Dept of Banking Supervision
Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi (Mr.):Principal Adviser to the Director-General,United Nations Industrial Development Organization
Senthil Kumar Deivasigamany :Vice President &
