Beyond Management-Intellectual Property Rights

The Beyond Management team is responsible for bringing different guest lecturers to LIBA and educating the students with the views these personalities have to offer on their respective subjects.Let us see what they had on offer this week-
"As each day passes in LIBA, it enriches us with some new experience. Last week was also similar with elites like Mr. T.V. Madhusudhan coming to college to give a lecture on the 'Value of IPR’s (Intellectual property rights)'.
We live in an era of globalization and intense competition. In this day and age, with goodwill and brands becoming more important than the actual product itself, we need to realize the value of IPR in running an organization.
We were enlightened about the importance of IPR’s by Mr. Madhusudhan. As explained by him, IPR’s are price objective to everyone. There are many types of IPR and the chief ones among them are patents, trademark, trade secrets, integrated circuits, plant varieties, etc.
Mr. Madhusudhan also spoke about breakthrough inventions and advised students that ideas, intelligence and inventions should not be treated as waste and should be considered as valuable assets.
Inventors and their discoveries are there to make our life easier, comfortable and much better and rewarding. Hence, he suggested ways in which we can thank the inventors like patents, design, trademark, geographical indications, copyrights, trade secrets and knowledge economy. According to him, an IPR is a technical, commercial and business tool -entrepreneurs and inventors should tap the advantages of this useful tool to see their business flourishing in near future.
The lecture was concluded with the following valuable management tools and advice to future managers of LIBA:
• Reduce redundant Research and Development activity.
• Market IP to buyers.
• Indentify technology spin off opportunities.
• Determine economies of IP enforcement.
• Evaluate commercial prospects for early stage Research and Development.
• Convert goodwill based valuation to market based valuation.
Mr. Madhusudhan effectively and patiently clarified and answered the doubts and queries of the students during the question-answer session.
The session was concluded with a vote of thanks and a memento being presented to the speaker by Dean, Mr. Gowrishankar".
